News ArchiveAugust 200710th Mountain Division Reunion [Posted 8/27/07] LCMA's Windjammers Jazz Orchestra performed at the Marriott Denver Tech Center August 2-3, 2007, for what will be the last national reunion organized by World War II veterans of the 10th Mountain Division. In honor of the troops, the Windjammers performed a special arrangement of "Bell Bottom Trousers" which the 10th Mountain Division renamed "90lbs of Rucksack" with their own lyrics, and led by Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Earl Clark. Former Benny Goodman Orchestra pianist Larry Meeks performed with the Windjammers during the two-day event. Located outside of Leadville, Colorado, the 10th Mountain Division called Camp Hale home during the 1940's. After training in the mountains of Colorado, the 10th Mountain Division distinguished itself in fighting on the island of Kiska, Alaska and in Italy. Historians have cited the 10th's involvement as pivotal in winning the war in Italy. The US Military Cemetery in Florence, Italy contains the graves of many of the 10th Mountain Division members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. After the war, many of the veterans of the 10th Mountain Division came home to leave their mark on the ski industry. Many of the prominent ski areas in the United States were started or managed by 10th vets, including Vail, Aspen, and Ski Cooper. A PBS docudrama about the 10th Mountain Division titled "The Last Ridge" received a special statewide airing by Rocky Mountain PBS on August 25. http://www.lastridge.com/
