Theatre Group Provides Forum for Local Talent

September 2, 2003
The Ovation Players, the theatre group associated with Littleton Community Music Association (LCMA), is currently producing a program that provides a stage for amateur playwrights, actors, and musicians to showcase their work.  The Fall One-Act Theatre Festival will highlight four different plays over a two month period.  This year's Festival showcases four exceptional plays written by local playwrights from the metropolitan region.  “Adventures in Therapy,” written by Constance Gelvin, tells the story of a dysfunctional family who together enter therapy in an attempt to calm the exhibitionism by their teenage daughter.   “No Blues for the Cabman,” created by Ken Crost, also finds a stage through the Festival.  In “No Blues,” Crost tells the story of a cabdriver who helps a businessman re-prioritize his life.  In November, the festival features a unique venture into the lives of African American women in the provocative “Climb Whisper” written by Mirage Thrams.  A cyberspace love-story with an unusual twist, “Web D’Amour,” written by W. Totten Reynolds, closes out the festival’s offerings.
In addition to the plays, entertainment by local amateur musicians is interwoven throughout the course of the evening.  “The purpose of this event,” explained festival producer Karen Main, “is to recognize and celebrate the talent that is often hidden in the wings of the Denver theatrical community.  Such talent includes actors, directors, production and stage workers.”  This type of a venture provides valuable learning opportunities for individuals who lack formal theatrical training or who want to further their involvement in theatre past their school experience.  “We want to create art, rather than re-create it through this festival,” noted Main.   “We want to embrace the talent and ideas of the local community and create spaces where that energy can flourish.  For us, that is an important aspect of artistry.”
For more information on the festival, visit the Ovation Players website at http://ovationplayers.com or contact the producers at 303-353-5522.  Performances will be held at The Event Center at Church Ranch in Westminster.  Tickets for the festival are $12 per evening; music begins at 6:00 pm, shows promptly at 7:00 pm.
